A Jump Diffusion Model for Spot Electricity Prices
In this paper we demonstrate the efficacy of a stochastic modelling approach involving both diffusion and a jump processes to describe the evolution of spot electricity prices in New South Wales. The model allows a deterministic time trend component and an unobserved process driven by both time varying volatility and occasional jumps. The structure allows us to cast the problem in a state space...
متن کاملMulti-factor jump-diffusion models of electricity prices
The recent deregulation of electricity markets has led to the creation of energy exchanges, where the electricity is freely traded. In this paper, we study the most salient statistical features of electricity prices with a particular attention to the European energy exchanges. These features can be adequately reproduced by the sum-OU model: a model representing the price as a sum of Lévy-driven...
متن کاملA new index for electricity spot markets
Different indexes are used in electricity markets worldwide to represent the daily behavior of spot prices. However, the peculiarities of these markets require a careful choice of the index, based on mathematical formulation and its statistical properties. Choosing a bad index may influence the financial policies of market players, since derivative pricing and hedging performance can be deeply ...
متن کاملA Structural Model for Electricity Prices
In this paper we propose a new and highly tractable structural approach to spot price modeling and derivative pricing in electricity markets, thus extending the growing branch of literature which describes power price dynamics via its primary supply and demand factors. Using a bid stack approach, our model translates the demand for power and the prices of fuels, used in the power generation pro...
متن کاملA diffusion model for electricity prices
Starting from a simple supply/demand model for electricity, we obtain a diffusion (i.e. jumpless) model for spot prices which can exhibit ’price spikes’. We estimate the parameters in the model using historical data from the Alberta and California markets, and compare this model with some others used for spot prices.
